Ruto unveils Sh10bn scholarship fund to boost education for underprivileged youth

President William Ruto has unveiled a new scholarship model, doubling the available funds from Sh5 billion to Sh10 billion. This substantial increase aims to provide up to 90 per cent of funding for students from underprivileged backgrounds nationwide, significantly enhancing access to education.

During his regional tour on Saturday, President Ruto highlighted the initiative's potential to boost literacy rates and transform educational opportunities for countless young Kenyans.

"The new funding model ensures no child is left behind," he stated. "The scholarship will cover both high school and Technical and Vocational Training institutes. Leaders, please inform your people to make use of the scholarship."

This move is part of a broader government strategy to equip the youth with essential skills and create employment opportunities, reinforcing the commitment to removing financial barriers to education.

"Our goal is not just to educate, but to empower our young people with the tools they need to succeed in the job market," he stated.

The President reiterated the government's commitment to supporting youth development through education and skill-building programs, highlighting that these efforts are crucial for fostering a more inclusive and prosperous future for all Kenyans.

At the same time, Ruto revealed the government's focus on ICT hubs to create online job opportunities for the youth, thereby improving their livelihoods.

"We want to give youth digital skills so that they can use the digital space to earn a living. To make that happen we are contracting Kenya Power to install high-speed internet in all TVETs across the country," said Ruto.

The president also vowed to support Governor Achani to improve the education status in the region by improving educational infrastructure.

"I am going to work with the Kwale government to enhance education. I will construct hostels to accommodate students here in Kinango Tvet. The hostels will have the capacity to accommodate about 600 students who come from far," said Ruto.

He urged youth to make use of the TVETs, to improve their livelihood through education.

He also asked the youth to cease protests and allow him time to implement the issues they raised.
