Shocked residents milled around the area where the incident happened.

Four people have lost their lives after a sewer system they were working on collapsed in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi.

The incident happened around 2 am on Friday.

Three people were rescued as the police and the Kenya Red Cross Society personnel launched a search for others who could still be trapped inside.

Police spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the incident.

"They were excavating a sewerage line when it collapsed. We have lost four while three have been rescued,” she said.

Shocked residents of Shauri Moyo milled around the area where the incident happened as police condoned it off to keep surging crowds at bay.

The Eastleigh Voice learnt that the sewerage works that collapsed involved the laying of underground tunnels for water passage.

John Kariuki, a worker at the site, said he was present when the incident happened.

"I heard a loud blast while people were shouting for help. When I went there I saw soil caving into the dug hole," said Kariuki.

According to him, the work on the road linking Eastleigh and Shauri Moyo neighbourhoods of Kamukunji Constituency was being done at night to avoid traffic interruption during the day.

Emergency teams that responded minutes after the alarm was raised said seven people had been trapped in the rubble.

Three individuals who have been rescued in a joint operation involving the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, NMS Ambulance, Kenya Red Cross and the police were taken to Mama Lucy Hospital.
