Lamu County commissions Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital in honour of late Deputy Governor

By |

Lamu County has officially commissioned the Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital, dedicating the facility’s male and female wards in memory of the late Deputy Governor, Raphael Munyua, who passed away earlier this month.

The dedication recognises his leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to improving healthcare services for the people of Lamu during his tenure as the county’s third Deputy Governor.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Saturday, Lamu Governor Issa Timamy praised the late Munyua for his dedication to public service, particularly in the healthcare sector.

"The late Deputy Governor Munyua was a true champion of health and well-being in Lamu. His legacy will continue to live on through the services provided in these wards," Governor Timamy said.

The hospital, now equipped with new private and semi-private wards, also introduced its first-ever dialysis unit, which will serve patients requiring specialised kidney care.

The dialysis unit features four machines, enhancing access to essential treatments within the region. In addition, the hospital unveiled a fully functional dental unit that will provide a range of services, including fillings and root canals.

Electricity capacity

Governor Timamy also announced the installation of a dedicated 315 KVA transformer, aimed at significantly improving the facility’s electricity capacity. He further noted the renovation of the radiology unit and the acquisition of a new ultrasound machine as part of the county’s commitment to elevating healthcare standards.

"We are determined to ensure that the people of Lamu have access to quality and affordable healthcare," Timamy added, emphasising his administration's dedication to transforming the health sector and improving the welfare of healthcare workers.

The ceremony was attended by the late Deputy Governor’s wife, Stella Tayo, who expressed gratitude for the county’s recognition of her husband’s work.

Munyua, aged 46, passed away on September 6, 2024, while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital's Critical Care Unit after being admitted with a severe headache.

He was laid to rest on September 19, 2024, in a burial presided over by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who described Munyua as a highly dedicated and development-oriented leader.

Residents of Lamu also paid tribute to Munyua, with local community leader Emmanuel Wanyoike Kimwa calling for unity in honour of the late Deputy Governor.

“Let us use his passing as an opportunity to embrace peace and unity,” Kimwa said.

Munyua leaves behind his wife and family, with his memory now firmly etched in the legacy of Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital’s dedication to health and community service.
