Teachers Service Commission extends deadline for recruitment applications

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has extended the deadline for teacher recruitment applications to midnight tonight, October 8, 2024.

Initially set for October 7, 2024, the deadline has been pushed back following a notice by the commission.

In a statement on Tuesday, TSC announced the extension, emphasizing that applications must be submitted online through their official website, www.tsc.go.ke, or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke.

The recruitment aims to fill a total of 46,000 vacancies across various educational levels: 6,000 in primary schools, 39,550 in junior secondary schools (JSS), and 450 in secondary schools.

The primary school position candidates must have at least a P1 certificate, while those applying for junior or senior secondary school positions must hold a diploma in education.

Concerned about potential fraud, TSC warned applicants about scammers who may attempt to exploit candidates during the recruitment process.

They reiterated that the entire application process is free of charge and urged any victims of such schemes to report them immediately.

Applicants were advised to report any suspicious activity to the nearest TSC office or headquarters.

They can also contact TSC via official telephone lines or email at [email protected] or [email protected].

Additionally, incidents should be reported to the nearest police station.

This extension provides an opportunity for more qualified candidates to apply, ensuring a thorough selection process for the available teaching positions.

This comes about three months after TSC faced backlash for the dismissal of 742 Junior Secondary School teachers, who were terminated shortly after a strike advocating for permanent employment.

The TSC cited "professional misconduct" and desertion of duty as reasons for the firings, despite the teachers having protested for better employment terms due to their intern status.

The commission had on May 22, 2024, sent show cause letters to the protesting teachers who had absconded their duties in which they were required to submit their responses in two weeks

TSC clarified that while 7,357 show-cause letters were issued, only 742 teachers were ultimately sacked, as many responded satisfactorily.

"Out of 10,348 teachers who received the show-cause letters, 9,606 teachers were able to respond within the two weeks, 742 teachers who did not report to work and whose whereabouts were not known had their contracts terminated and replaced," the commission said.
