Nairobi roads set for partial closure ahead of Sunday's Standard Chartered marathon

By |

The Southern Bypass will be the most affected route, alongside six other key roads: parts of Ngong Road, Mombasa Road, Likoni Road, Lenana Road, and Waiyaki Way.

Nairobi motorists will be forced to look for alternative routes as Southern Bypass and six other roads will experience temporary partial closure for the 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi marathon on Sunday, October 27, 2024

In a statement released by the marathon organisers on Wednesday, traffic disruptions will begin at 11:59 pm on October 26, 2024 and last until 1:30 pm on Sunday.

The marathon will kick off at Uhuru Gardens along Langata Road, with significant road impacts anticipated.

The Southern Bypass will be the most affected route, alongside six other key roads: parts of Ngong Road, Mombasa Road, Likoni Road, Lenana Road, and Waiyaki Way.

Motorists looking to travel the 15-kilometre stretch from Karen Shopping Centre to Kikuyu Town via the Southern Bypass are advised to use Dagoretti Road as an alternative.

Accessing Mombasa Road from Galleria Mall via the Southern Bypass will also be challenging on Sunday morning.

Alternative roads

Drivers are encouraged to use Uhuru Highway through Langata Road instead.

Additionally, those travelling to Ole Sereni Hotel should approach it through NextGen Mall rather than the Southern Bypass.

For vehicles connecting from Likoni Road to Mombasa Road, Enterprise Road will serve as the recommended route during the marathon.

This year's marathon promises to be particularly exciting, having received a significant financial boost of Sh173 million from sponsors, which includes both monetary support and in-kind contributions aimed at enhancing the overall race experience.

The registration process concluded on October 10, with 25,000 runners signing up for the marathon, surpassing the initial target of 20,000 participants.

The 5km, 10km, and 21km races have attracted the most interest among competitors.

Motorists and residents are urged to plan accordingly and be mindful of the road closures as Nairobi gears up for this major sporting event.
