The Telco announced plans to refund the transaction fee for the first M-Pesa send money transaction of the day.

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecommunications provider on Wednesday announced plans to refund the transaction fee for the first M-Pesa send money transaction of the day.

This offer was announced as Safaricom commemorates the company's 24th anniversary since its inception.

"Asante kwa miaka 24. Get your transaction fee refunded for the first send money transaction today," Safaricom stated.

" Users can easily take advantage of this promotion by using the M-Pesa app or dialling *344#. However, customers should note that this offer is valid only for today."

In addition to the transaction fee refund, Safaricom is rolling out discounted offers to celebrate its milestone.

The company announced a 25 per cent discount on business fibre internet services, enhancing its commitment to provide affordable connectivity to its customers.

Safaricom's financial performance has also been notable. Earlier this year, the company reported earnings before interest and tax of Sh139.9 billion for the period ending March 31, 2024.

At a group level, which includes investments in Safaricom Ethiopia, the company achieved an EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) of Sh94.9 billion, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 3.5 per cent.

This performance exceeded market expectations, surpassing the guidance range of Sh129 billion to Sh132 billion.

Success factors

Safaricom attributed its success to strategies focused on customer segmentation, digitisation in the public sector, and investments in new technologies.

"This performance was driven by customer segmentation, public sector digitisation, investments in new technologies, and better use of data and analytics to understand and serve customers better," the firm explained.

The company has a tradition of rewarding its customers during its anniversaries. When Safaricom turned 20, it offered all its customers one free call of up to 20 minutes, along with a notification a day in advance.

Long-time customers received a complimentary 20GB data bundle, valid for seven days, while those purchasing personalised Tunukiwa voice offers enjoyed additional free calling minutes.

Reflecting on the company's journey, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa noted that in the past two decades, Safaricom has grown from a telecommunication service provider to a technology company, and their customers have been a key part of this journey.

" We are cognizant that technology and a data-driven economy can further support Kenya's economic growth, and these will be our launchpad for the next 20 years," he said.
