Kenya Railways announces 14-day suspension of Nairobi commuter trains

By |

Notably, the suspension will not affect the weekly Safari trains to Nanyuki and Kisumu, which will run as scheduled.

Kenya Railways has announced a temporary suspension of commuter train services in Nairobi from December 23, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

In a notice on Thursday, Kenya Railways informed commuters that the suspension would affect all scheduled travels during this period, leaving many passengers looking for alternative transport options.

"We wish to notify members of the public that commuter train services will temporarily be suspended from December 23, 2024, to January 5, 2025," the notice read.

While the reasons for the suspension were not specified in the notice, Kenya Railways assured commuters that some services would continue as usual.

Notably, the suspension will not affect the weekly Safari trains to Nanyuki and Kisumu, which will run as scheduled.

Additionally, the Madaraka Express services via the standard gauge railway (SGR) will remain operational, unaffected by the commuter train suspension.

"Kindly note that this temporary suspension will not affect the standard gauge railway link train and the weekly Safari trains to Nanyuki and Kisumu which will continue to operate as per schedule," the notice said.

This suspension comes at a time when Kenya Railways is making efforts to accommodate the expected surge in passenger numbers during the holiday period.

The same day, the company announced that two new trips would be added to the Kisumu-Nairobi route starting January 15, 2025, to facilitate travel during the festive season and the school opening period.

This is not the first instance of commuter train service disruptions.

Earlier, on November 25, 2024, Kenya Railways temporarily suspended the commuter train service between Nairobi central business district and Limuru due to "unavoidable circumstances", although specific reasons were not disclosed.

Another disruption occurred on October 10, 2024, when all commuter services were halted for Mazingira Day, previously known as Utamaduni Day.

During that occasion, the link train between Nairobi Central Station and Nairobi Terminus continued operating.

Kenya Railways has insisted that these suspensions and adjustments are part of the company's broader efforts to ensure passenger safety while responding to various factors, including environmental observances and infrastructure upgrades.
