Mohamed and Abdikarim are accused of robbing Abdalla Mohamed Ahmed of a mobile phone worth Sh45,000, earphones valued at Sh1,000, and Sh3,000 in cash on December 17. During the alleged robbery, the suspects reportedly threatened Abdalla with a knife and warned him not to raise an alarm while ransacking his pockets.
Abdalla was walking along Gaborone Street when three men accosted him, slapped him, and pointed a knife at him. The suspects entered a nearby building but were apprehended by members of the public after Abdalla alerted taxi operators in the vicinity.
The two men reportedly surrendered a mobile phone suspected to be stolen and promised to recover Abdalla’s phone from an accomplice. A taxi driver rescued them from a lynch mob, but they were arrested by police the following day after allegedly stealing from another pedestrian.
The suspects were also charged with robbing Bethru Mahin Sheikh on the same night. Bethru was reportedly carrying Sh45,000 and a mobile phone worth Sh18,000, collected from a merry-go-round group when he was attacked and robbed.
The prosecution alleges that Mohamed and Abdikarim used actual violence during the robbery, assaulting Bethru with a club. Bethru identified the suspects at the police station and recognised the surrendered mobile phone as his, taken moments before Abdalla’s robbery.
The accused pleaded not guilty before Senior Principal Magistrate Justus Kituku at the Makadara Law Courts. They were granted a bond of Sh200,000 or cash bail of Sh100,000. The case will be mentioned on February 20, 2025, with the hearing set to commence on July 17, 2025.
In a related incident, two others were arraigned for violent robberies in the same area. Farouk Issa and a minor are accused of robbing a taxi driver, Festus Benjamin Ochieng, of a mobile phone worth Sh90,000 on December 12.
Farouk, charged jointly with the minor and another accomplice still at large, allegedly committed the offence after Festus dropped a client. The minor was not charged as his age is yet to be confirmed.
Farouk denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi at the Makadara Law Courts. He was released on bond of Sh300,000 or alternative cash bail of Sh200,000.
The case will be mentioned on March 20, 2025, with the hearing scheduled for 30 June 2025.
