Highlighting the importance of community-driven solutions and improved public communication, Dr. Mulongo urged for a united effort to implement best practices and drive meaningful health improvements nationwide.

In a high-stakes meeting with key health stakeholders, Health Cabinet Secretary Dr Debora Mulongo delivered a clarion call for urgent reforms in community health programs.

Addressing a gathering of senior officials, including Principal Secretaries Kimtai Harry and Muthoni Muriuki, as well as Director General of Health Dr Patrick Amoth, Dr Mulongo underscored the critical need to enhance accessibility and affordability of healthcare across Kenya, with a particular focus on maternal and child health services.

Dr. Mulongo, on Monday, emphasised the pressing need for action, stating, “It’s time to deliver, and we must ensure that every Kenyan has access to affordable healthcare.”

She reaffirmed her commitment to realising the President’s vision for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and called for robust collaboration among stakeholders.

Highlighting the importance of community-driven solutions and improved public communication, Dr. Mulongo urged for a united effort to implement best practices and drive meaningful health improvements nationwide.

In 2023, President William Ruto introduced the UHC plan, which guarantees free healthcare services at Level 1, 2, and 3 dispensaries and health centres nationwide.

The plan ensures that treatment at these facilities will be covered by the government through the Primary Health Care Fund, aiming to remove financial barriers to healthcare and ensure that no Kenyan is excluded from essential health services.

The plan also involves local communities in managing and operating their health centres. Each community will have a committee to address issues such as the availability of medicine and staff, thereby reducing the need for long-distance travel to obtain essential drugs.

In addition, each health centre will receive dedicated funding to ensure it is adequately equipped to meet local needs.

Contributions to UHC will be income-based, ensuring affordability for all, with free treatment available at government hospitals for those unable to pay. The plan includes a Chronic Illness Fund to ensure continued care if any limits are reached.

This comprehensive approach follows President Ruto’s approval of four health bills, reinforcing his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and transforming Kenya's healthcare system.
