Hospitals told to ensure uninterrupted services for SHA-registered patients

The Ministry of Health has directed all healthcare providers to ensure uninterrupted services for Kenyans registered under the new Social Health Authority (SHA) following its rollout on October 1st, which led to the suspension of the 57-year National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

In a statement released on Wednesday, Principal Secretary Hari Kimtai emphasised the government's commitment to facilitating a seamless transition.

“Hospitals are urged to prioritise the care of SHA members and maintain communication with the ministry,” he stated.

He said the government appreciates the ongoing dedication of healthcare providers in delivering essential services during this transition period and that any challenges that arise will be promptly addressed.

To support healthcare providers and tackle operational concerns, the Ministry of Health is implementing the following proactive measures:

-Immediate clarification of service levels and contracts to facilitate smooth transitions and continued service delivery.

-Enhanced public communication through social media and the SHA website to address frequently asked questions regarding member registration, dependents, and access to services.

-Close collaboration with hospitals to ensure that all patients, including those scheduled for surgeries, receive uninterrupted care.

However, the second day of the transition to SHA faced significant hurdles, with many patients stranded and others being turned away as some hospitals demanded cash payments.

Reports indicate that some Kenyans have encountered difficulties with payment systems, with certain websites refusing to function, leading to widespread frustration.

The Ministry of Health aims to register 12 million households under the social health insurance programme.
