KU Hospital appoints Isaac Irungu Kamau as acting CEO as Ahmed takes leave

By |

While the reason for Ahmed's leave has not been disclosed, the board's decision marks a significant leadership shift at the hospital.

The Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has appointed Isaac Irungu Kamau as the acting CEO following the decision to allow Ahmed Dagane to proceed on leave.

KUTRRH's board announced the appointment in a letter dated November 28, 2024

The changes take effect immediately.

The letter, seen by The Eastleigh Voice, is signed by the hospital's chairperson, Prof Olive Mugenda. It states that the decision was made after a board meeting that resolved to grant Ahmed leave.

"Following a resolution by the Board in a meeting held on November 28, 2024, to allow the Chief Executive Officer to proceed on leave, you are hereby appointed to the position of Acting Chief Executive Officer (Ag. CEO) with immediate effect from the date of this letter," the letter says.

"Your appointment will remain in effect until further notice. You will be paid appropriate allowances as the Ag. Chief Executive Officer. We wish you well and the Board of Directors looks forward to efficient and effective service delivery."

Before he was appointed acting CEO, Kamau served as the director of the Integrated Medical Informatics Centre (IMIC) and Hospital Operations at KUTRRH.

While the reason for Ahmed's leave has not been disclosed, the board's decision marks a significant leadership shift at the hospital.

Ahmed, who was appointed CEO of the Sh8 billion facility in July 2022, led KUTRRH during a period of transformation.

Under his leadership, the hospital became a state corporation following an executive order by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on January 22, 2019.

The hospital, which is part of Kenya's national health infrastructure, operates alongside Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital as a key Health ministry parastatal.

Despite his qualifications in nursing and a master's degree in Business Administration, Ahmed's appointment sparked some controversy in 2023.

The Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education criticised KUTRRH's board for appointing a non-medical doctor to head the hospital.

But while defending the appointment, Mugenda clarified that Ahmed was a trained health professional.

"The CEO is not a doctor, but he is a health professional," she said then.

The transition to an acting CEO comes at a time when the hospital is focusing on strengthening its service delivery and expanding its role within the country's healthcare system.
