In a concerted effort to address the dire situation caused by ongoing floods in Mandera and Wajir, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale spearheaded a significant humanitarian relief mission. Joined by Governors Mohamed Adan Khalif of Mandera, Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir, and representatives from the Kenya Red Cross, the mission aimed to provide critical assistance to the flood-affected community of Elwak Sub-county, Mandera County.

KDF Air assets played a crucial role in lifting and distributing tonnes of medicine, pharmaceutical products, and non-food items to Elwak, which has been severely impacted by flooding, leaving the area submerged with a scarcity of food and essential medical supplies. The torrential rainfall has led to the destruction of properties and livestock, necessitating ongoing coordination for the airlifting of essential food items and conducting rescue missions, especially for the elderly, sick, and vulnerable citizens.

The Humanitarian Relief Support Operation, executed in collaboration with various partners, has already reached several locations, delivering aid to households in need. This includes the distribution of tonnes of essentials in areas such as Gherille Kenya/Handaki East, Konton/Gumurey, Arbajan, Athibohole, Sariff, Elwak Sub-county, Kone (Tana River), Burder, and Diff.

Looking ahead, more essentials are planned for delivery in various areas, including trading centers in Sololo and North Horr Sub-counties in Marsabit County, as well as towns and trading centers in Liboi, Hulugho, Fafi Centre, Gurufa in Garissa County, and two towns/trading centers in Isiolo County.

Collaborating with the Ministry of Roads, the mission is committed to opening up the road network in the affected regions within the next 10 days to allow the free flow of people, goods, and services.
