Step-by-step guide: How to verify your voter registration status on the IEBC portal

IEBC has reassured the public that no voter data has been lost and that the upgraded systems will “improve user experience, enhance security, and increase efficiency” as Kenya prepares for the 2027 polls.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reinstated access to its voter verification portal following widespread public concern over its sudden downtime, just two years before the highly anticipated 2027 General Election.

The portal, which allows Kenyans to confirm their voter registration details, was offline over the weekend, triggering confusion and a wave of online speculation.

The IEBC later clarified that the outage was due to scheduled system maintenance tied to a broader migration to new digital infrastructure.

“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) wishes to inform the public that it is currently undertaking a scheduled system maintenance on its voter verification portal,” read part of the unsigned IEBC statement.

Despite this explanation, the unexpected nature of the shutdown triggered backlash online, with Kenyans questioning the timing, transparency, and preparedness of the IEBC in handling electoral processes.

Portal now active: How to check your voter registration status

As of Tuesday, July 8, The Eastleigh Voice confirmed that the portal is now working and voters can go ahead and check their details.

The IEBC also confirmed that the portal is fully operational, and members of the public can now confirm their registration details.

Here is a step-by-step guide to using the IEBC voter verification platform:

Step 1: Visit the Official IEBC Verification Portal

Go to: [https://verify.iebc.or.ke](https://verify.iebc.or.ke)

Step 2: Enter the required information

You will need to input:

Step 4: Review your voter registration info

If registered, the system will display:

If details are missing or incorrect

If you notice an error or cannot retrieve your data, visit your nearest IEBC constituency office. Carry the original ID or passport you registered with. You can also contact IEBC via their helpline or official social media channels.

The portal’s restoration brought relief to many Kenyans, especially first-time voters and diaspora citizens worried about potential delays in the electoral process.

“It’s good to see IEBC taking digital infrastructure seriously. But communication is key. A heads-up before taking systems offline would have helped ease panic,” said Jane Muthoni, a voter from Nairobi.

Others, however, remained sceptical about the timing and transparency of the system migration.

“Two years to the election is not early if the upgrades aren’t tested and stable. Let’s not pretend we didn’t see this same script before the 2022 polls,” tweeted X user, @Odhiambo\_ke.

The Commission has reassured the public that no voter data has been lost and that the upgraded systems will “improve user experience, enhance security, and increase efficiency” as Kenya prepares for the 2027 polls.
