Interior CS Murkomen dismisses political motive in Muturi’s security withdrawal claims

Murkomen stated that the Interior Ministry does not make decisions based on politics.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed claims by former Public Service CS Justin Muturi that the government is using security withdrawals as a tool for political intimidation, insisting that all procedures in the security sector adhere strictly to the law.

Speaking during his ongoing security assessment tour in the Coast region on Tuesday, Murkomen stated that the Interior Ministry does not make decisions based on politics.

“In the security sector, we don’t do things politically. We must all follow the law, and I don’t think any security can be withdrawn from anyone who is entitled to it for political reasons,” Murkomen told reporters in Kwale County.

Murkomen’s remarks came after Muturi alleged that his security detail was withdrawn on Monday night in what he termed an act of intimidation.

“My security detail was withdrawn last night at around 7:30 p.m. Two police officers who were attached to me by virtue of my former role as Speaker of the National Assembly were instructed not to report on duty,” Muturi told journalists on Tuesday.

Muturi, who was relieved of his Cabinet duties by President William Ruto on March 26, claimed the withdrawal was part of a broader scheme to silence dissenting voices within government ranks.

“If this is another attempt to intimidate me, they’ve dialled the wrong number,” he added defiantly.

Tensions between the former CS and the current administration have been escalating, especially after Muturi openly criticised the government’s handling of alleged abductions during last year’s anti-government protests, an issue he has repeatedly demanded be addressed.

His son was among those allegedly abducted and later released.

Skipped Cabinet meetings

Before he was fired, Muturi had also distanced himself from Cabinet meetings, citing the unresolved abduction cases as the reason for his protest.

In a recent televised interview on NTV’s Fixing the Nation, Muturi accused President Ruto of being duplicitous and unfit for office.

“I think William Ruto is a person with two personalities. The William Ruto that presents himself to the public is completely different from the one that sits in office and crafts stuff… Such a person is a dangerous character,” Muturi said.

In response, President Ruto defended the decision to drop Muturi, describing him as reluctant and ineffective in his Cabinet role.

“When I appointed him as Attorney-General, he was hesitant, saying he hadn’t practised law for a while. His performance left a lot to be desired, and that’s why I reassigned him,” Ruto said during a recent public address.

Meanwhile, Murkomen has also questioned Muturi’s recent claims that he has sensitive government documents stored via email. He suggested that such an admission could warrant legal action.

“If he’s saying he has kept government documents and stored them in email, that alone could warrant an arrest. The rules on handling government information are well known,” said Murkomen during a roundtable with journalists in Mombasa on Monday night.

He added that while no case against Muturi has reached the threshold to be deemed corruption, he should present any evidence he has to the relevant authorities.

“If it reaches a point where it meets the threshold, maybe he will be summoned. But why wait? The other day, he walked to the DCI. He can do the same with evidence,” he said.
