Senator Methu writes to IPOA calling for probe after Nyandarua woman suffers miscarriage in police custody

Reports indicate that the suspect had been held over a theft allegation but developed medical complications while in custody, resulting in the loss of her seven-month pregnancy.

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has issued an urgent appeal to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), calling for an investigation into an alleged miscarriage that occurred during the detention of a pregnant suspect at Rwanyambo Police Station.

Reports indicate that the suspect had been held over a theft allegation but developed medical complications while in custody, resulting in the loss of her seven-month pregnancy.

“I write to formally request an urgent investigation into a disturbing incident involving a female suspect, Milkah Wangari, who reportedly suffered a miscarriage while in custody at Rwanyambo Police Station, Nyandarua County,” the Senator stated.

He added that the suspect was arrested at around 11 pm on Thursday, following accusations by her employer that she had stolen Sh9,000 from his liquor business.

“While in police custody, the suspect reportedly requested medical attention, which was not granted, leading to the loss of her pregnancy. Given the gravity of these allegations and the constitutional rights of suspects in custody, I urge IPOA to treat this matter with urgency, establish the facts, and take appropriate action against any officers found culpable,” the legislator appealed.

According to the victim’s family, their pleas for her release were ignored by the police.

“The case of Ms Milkah Wangari is deeply distressing and reflects the harsh realities Kenyans face at the hands of a cruel and unaccountable National Police Service. Detaining a heavily pregnant woman over an allegation involving Sh9,000, only for her to lose her unborn child while in custody, is profoundly inhumane. IPOA Kenya must act to weed out rogue officers tarnishing the image of the national police,” the Senator demanded.

The incident adds to growing public concern over escalating reports of police brutality in the country.

On Sunday, another suspect who had been arrested by police was found to have been killed in cold blood, sparking nationwide outrage.

Albert Ojwang is alleged to have defamed a senior police officer prior to his arrest and subsequent detention before he met his death.
