Seven killed in lorry-matatu collision at Korompoi on Isinya-Namanga highway

This fatal incident follows another deadly crash on Friday evening, where at least 25 people died when a bus carrying mourners overturned at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu-Kakamega Road.

Seven people lost their lives in a serious road accident involving a matatu and a lorry along the Kitengela–Isinya Road early Saturday morning, August 9.

The crash at Korompoi, where the matatu collided head-on with a lorry, caused major disruptions as emergency teams rushed to the scene, leaving several others injured and the road blocked by angry residents demanding urgent action.

A photo seen by The Eastleigh Voice showed the front of the matatu badly damaged while first responders worked to assist victims and coordinate rescue efforts.

The exact cause of the accident was still unknown by the time of reporting, and police officers had yet to arrive at the site.

Locals upset by the tragedy blocked the Kitengela-Isinya Road, demanding swift measures to improve road safety.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area while emergency services continue their work.

This fatal incident follows another deadly crash on Friday evening, where at least 25 people died when a bus carrying mourners overturned at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

The bus, from AIC Naki High School, lost control near the blackspot at around 5:30 pm.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina confirmed the bus was travelling from Kakamega toward Kisumu when the driver appeared to have lost control and the vehicle plunged into a ditch.

“We ask traffic enforcers to act swiftly to bring to book those responsible for any acts of negligence leading to the accident and address all traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country,” President William Ruto said on Saturday.

He also extended condolences to the families affected by these accidents and called on traffic authorities to act immediately to enforce road safety laws and hold negligent parties accountable.

Health Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Olunga reported that 21 people died instantly at the scene, with four others succumbing shortly after arriving at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and

Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). Currently, 28 patients, including a child, are receiving medical care.

“We have mobilised all health workers on duty and alerted additional personnel to ensure the injured get the best possible care,” Olunga said.

Earlier this week, another tragedy occurred near Morendat Farm in Naivasha, where eight people died after a bus collided with a train.

The victims, mostly Kenya Pipeline Company employees heading home, were caught in a collision after the bus driver allegedly crossed the railway line without checking.

The train dragged the bus for over 200 metres, causing extensive damage and loss of life.
