Court suspends notice revoking Isiolo County offices relocation

The outcome of the case is likely to have far-reaching implications for governance and service delivery in Isiolo, where the siting of county offices has been a politically sensitive issue.

The High Court in Isiolo has suspended the revocation of a notice that had directed the relocation of Isiolo County offices.

In a ruling delivered on September 1, 2025, Lady Justice Sophie Chebet Chirchir ordered a stay of Gazette Notice No. 11451, which sought to nullify Gazette Notice No. 11384 that had earlier sanctioned the relocation of county offices.

The case, filed under reference HCCHRPET/E009/2025 by petitioner Hassan Bonaya against the State Law Office and the Clerk of the Isiolo County Assembly, challenges the legality of attempts to reverse the relocation directive.

Justice Chirchir ruled that the contested revocation notice would remain suspended pending a full hearing of the matter. She further directed the respondents to file their responses within seven days, with the petitioner allowed three days thereafter to reply.

The matter is set for an inter-partes hearing on September 23, 2025.

The dispute stems from conflicting government directives on the relocation of county offices. While Gazette Notice No. 11384 had approved the relocation, the subsequent Gazette Notice No. 11451 sought to cancel it, sparking a legal tussle.

The court’s intervention effectively preserves the status quo until the legality of the revocation is determined.
