Isiolo elders call for dialogue amid Governor Abdi Guyo's impeachment row

The elders emphasised that while impeachment is legal, it's " tedious" and risks derailing development and disrupting service delivery.

Isiolo County Assembly Speaker Mohamed Roba called upon residents and stakeholders across 10 wards to present their submissions or representations they have at the ward level on June 24 regarding the impeachment of Governor Abdi Guyo.

The speaker stated that a standing order on the impeachment was tabled during an assembly sitting on June 18.

A section of the Somali community professionals and the council of elders in Isiolo town appealed to the County Assembly Members (MCAs) and others pushing for the impeachment to explore an alternative dispute resolution instead.

They offered to arbitrate to avert the risk of destabilising the prevailing peaceful coexistence among communities in the county.

They cited the commotion witnessed last week in Isiolo town and the tension that was already building up.

In a joint statement read by Luqman Ahmed, they emphasised that while impeachment is legal, it's " tedious" and risks derailing development and disrupting service delivery.

The professionals and the community elders observed that ousting Governor Abdi Guyo should be the last resort after all other avenues of resolving existing concerns are exhausted.

Abdulkadir Sharif, chairperson of the Somali Council of Elders, clarified that they were not backing any political faction, but were instead placating the tense situation to lead mediation efforts to foster reconciliation.

He said the unique inter-ethnic dynamic of Isiolo County required the issue to be handled amicably.

The High Court in Isiolo last Monday issued an order stopping the impeachment of Abdi pending hearing and determination of the case.

The court order barred Members of the County Assembly from "admitting, processing, debating or considering" the impeachment motion tabled before the assembly on June 10, 2025.

Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana tabled a notice motion for the governor's impeachment, accusing him of presiding over numerous stalled development projects and failing to meet county revenue targets.
