CS Murkomen seeks police help over possible sabotage after JKIA power outage

The CS on Sunday night said he was forced to make the move considering the frequency of the power disruption, and taking into account the fact that JKIA is a facility of strategic national importance.

Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has formally requested the National Police Service to investigate possible acts of sabotage and coverup after the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was plunged into darkness on Sunday evening after a nationwide power outage.

The CS on Sunday night said he was forced to make the move considering the frequency of the power disruption, and taking into account the fact that JKIA is a facility of strategic national importance.

Murkomen said he led a team composed of PS Transport, Kenya Airports Authority Board Chairman and Managing Director among other KAA officials to assess the situation at the airport.

"A power outage was experienced in many parts of the country tonight. Changeover to the standby generators ensured power was immediately restored to most parts of JKIA. Regrettably, supply did not immediately resume at terminals 1A and 1E," the CS said.

"As you may be aware, there have been problems with JKIA which we have been addressing progressively."

"JKIA mess"

The CS said "The cleanup of the mess at JKIA continues," as he instructed the Kenya Airports Authority Board to "carry on with the reform agenda and the management to implement, as directed, the report of the technical committee which I recently constituted."

The KAA on Sunday issued an apology to passengers and stakeholders over the power outage experienced at JKIA.

This was the third blackout of its kind in three months, affecting JKIA where the backup generators failed to power up.

The last update from Kenya Power at 2.10 am on Monday said power supply had been restored in the whole of Mt Kenya, South Nyanza, Western, Central Rift, North Rift, North Eastern and most parts of Nairobi.

"Restoration for Coast region and sections of Nairobi is ongoing. We thank our customers for their patience and assure them that we are working round the clock to restore normalcy to the remaining areas as soon as possible," Kenya Power said.
