Boniface Kariuki: Mask vendor shot during Gen Z protests dies at KNH, family confirms
Boniface Kariuki had undergone two surgeries at Kenyatta National Hospital, where he remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) until his death.
Boniface Kariuki, the hawker who was shot at close range during the ‘Justice for Albert Ojwang’ protests two weeks ago, has succumbed to his injuries.
According to family spokesperson Emily Wanjira, Kariuki was pronounced dead at 3:15pm on Monday, June 30. His death comes just a day after the family announced that he was brain-dead.

“We received a call around 12:47pm on Sunday. His brain stem is completely dead,” said Wanjira.
Kariuki, who sold face masks for a living, was shot in the head at point-blank range by a police officer during protests that turned violent. Demonstrators clashed with police in running battles that lasted the entire day.
The protest was part of a growing nationwide outcry seeking justice for Albert Ojwang, a teacher and blogger who was allegedly abducted from his home in Homa Bay and later died in police custody in Nairobi.
“The only fear we have now is when the heart will stop. The only thing we need is justice for our child,” Wanjira added.
