"Wear Masks for Justice": Comedian Eric Omondi rallies Kenyans to show solidarity for shot hawker Boniface Kariuki

Activist and comedian Eric Omondi has urged Kenyans to join a nationwide solidarity walk today, Friday, to honour Boniface Kariuki, who was shot at close range by police during a protest in Nairobi on Tuesday.

“I am calling upon Kenyans all over the country, this Friday let’s all wear masks in solidarity with our brother Boniface Kariuki,” he said in a statement on X.
Kariuki in the Nairobi Central Business District, as other protesters demanded justice for the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.
He was selling masks when he was confronted by two police officers, before he was shot by one of them.
Shocked protesters attempted to confront the officers and help Kariuki, who was left lying on the ground with a shattered head and bleeding heavily.
He was later rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.
A fellow vendor who witnessed the incident broke down in tears.
“He has never taken anything from anyone; he has never stolen. He was selling masks. He has not killed, what will his family say when he is?” she said.
The shooting has sparked public outrage, with many Kenyans expressing anger over what they see as continued brutality by the police.
Several leaders have condemned the actions of the officers, stating that police are meant to protect citizens, not harm them
