Kenya Railways to refund passengers affected by July 6 Mombasa-Nairobi Madaraka Express suspension

The corporation said unprinted tickets will be automatically refunded to the mobile numbers used during purchase, while those with printed tickets will need to visit the nearest station to claim their refund.
Kenya Railways has announced that passengers affected by the temporary suspension of the 10:00 pm Madaraka Express train from Mombasa to Nairobi on July 6 will receive refunds.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the corporation said unprinted tickets will be automatically refunded to the mobile numbers used during purchase, while those with printed tickets will need to visit the nearest station to claim their refund.

"Kenya Railways wishes to inform passengers affected by the suspension of the 10:00 PM Madaraka Express passenger train from Mombasa to Nairobi on July 6 that refunds will be issued to those who were unable to travel via the alternative train options provided," the statement reads.
"For passengers who had not printed their tickets, refunds will be automatically processed to the mobile number used during ticket purchase. For passengers who had printed their tickets, kindly present your printed ticket at the nearest termini or station for refund processing."
Kenya Railways also apologised for the inconvenience caused and expressed gratitude to passengers for their patience and understanding.
"We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding," the company said.
Hundreds left stranded
The sudden cancellation of the night train left hundreds of passengers stranded at the Mombasa SGR terminus, with many caught off guard by the unexpected suspension.
While Kenya Railways attributed the disruption to technical issues, reports suggested the suspension was triggered by a government directive following intelligence that youths intended to travel to Nairobi for the Saba Saba protests on July 7.
Normal service on the Mombasa-Nairobi route resumed the following day after the alleged technical problem was resolved.
"We have worked on a mechanism to transport all affected passengers, including those who missed the earlier train," said Kenya Railways then.
"The affected passengers are, therefore, advised to report to the Mombasa terminus on 7th July, 2025 by 8 am for travel. Tickets dated 6th July, 2025, will be deemed valid for boarding and travel."
