Sasha Mutai resigns as KRU Chairman amid stormy fallout

Sasha Mutai has resigned as chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union just moments before a no-confidence motion was tabled. His exit follows claims of financial mismanagement and deepening divisions within the board.
Alexander “Sasha” Mutai has officially stepped down as Chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), following a tense Special General Meeting (SGM) held on Friday at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
Mutai’s resignation came moments before a no-confidence motion sponsored by KRU Secretary General Ray Olendo was due to be tabled. Having taken office unopposed in March 2023, Mutai cited internal board wrangles, political pressure, and the need to protect his integrity as the reasons for his decision.

“Maybe I’m not a good politician, maybe I don’t know how to cajole,” Mutai said in an emotional address. “Having read the room and looking up to my role model Mwangi Muthee, I hereby tender my resignation as chair.”
Mutai leaves under scrutiny over allegations of financial impropriety involving Ksh 13.2 million—claims he firmly rejected during the meeting. According to documents circulated by Olendo, the funds were allegedly paid to vendors who had not provided any services. Mutai dismissed the accusations as defamatory.
“Thank you Mr Secretary for making me a rich man in future because I will take this to court,” he said defiantly. “My name has been tarnished. I’ve only been in court because of rugby, all my life.”
He further alleged that some board members actively worked to undermine his leadership. Mutai claimed that three had submitted forged CRB certificates, while two others had refused to vacate office despite reaching their term limits.
“Unfortunately, they all ganged up,” he said. “But it’s democracy—if nine people say my white shirt is black, it’s still white. I leave with my head held high.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Mutai highlighted what he saw as key achievements, including restoring sponsorships and reviving the Kenya Sevens team. He insisted his decision to step down was about principle.
“I will not compromise my values and integrity. I’ve lived 48 years with those standards, and this is not the time to change just to be chairman of Kenya Rugby Union,” he stated.
His departure lays bare the deep divisions within the KRU board. Mutai suggested that the final push against his leadership began after a change of guard at Mwamba RFC, one of the country’s most influential rugby clubs.
As for the future, Mutai said he has no plans to walk away from the game entirely.
“I’ve played the game, captained teams, served as director, vice-chairman, and now chairman. I’ll still be around. I love this game too much to walk away completely.”
