Red Cross said later that its first responders and the county fire department put out the fire.
"Seven staff quarters have been affected," it said, adding "assessments are underway to evaluate the extent of the damage and plan recovery support".
In 2015, a fire at the prison destroyed the houses of more than 20 warders, with reports indicating that it started after a warder forgot to disconnect an iron.
Two other fires have taken place in Nairobi over the last few weeks, one in Embakasi East's Mradi area in February, when an explosion at a gas plant left at least 7 dead and nearly 350 wounded.
In January, a huge fire destroyed a large part of the Jua Kali market along Landhies Road.
