Ruto suspends Mishra as BioVax chair in wake of Mediheal kidney transplant probe

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that it is investigating Mediheal Hospital in Eldoret over allegations of organ trafficking involving foreign kidney donors, following a complaint from the Transplantation Society.

Dr Swarup Mishra has been suspended as chairperson of the Kenya Biovax Institute, following allegations surrounding unethical procedures involving illegal kidney transplants at Eldoret’s Mediheal Hospital, which he founded.

In a statement released on Friday, the State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed that the suspension would remain in effect pending further investigations into the matter.

"President William Ruto reaffirmed the government's dedication to combating corruption, highlighting the importance of maintaining integrity in healthcare and ensuring justice for victims of malpractice".

In 2023, Kenya's Health Ministry commissioned an investigation into Mediheal Hospital and found that donors and recipients were in many cases not related, and some high-risk transplants were conducted, such as on cancer patients or the extremely elderly.

Almost all procedures were paid in cash.

The report recommended that "the allegation of organ trafficking must be investigated by relevant authorities."

Despite these alarming findings, the report was never made public, and no action was taken.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that it is investigating Mediheal Hospital in Eldoret over allegations of organ trafficking involving foreign kidney donors, following a complaint from the Transplantation Society.

Mishra, who lost his parliamentary seat to Julius Ruto, the former Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member for Finance, in the August 2022 elections, was appointed last year to lead the institute and was set to serve a three-year term.

Ruto, in his statement, reiterated the government's firm commitment to fighting corruption and upholding integrity in healthcare, ensuring public safety and delivering justice for victims of malpractice.
