The pinnacle of Kiptum's extraordinary year came at the Chicago Marathon on October 8, 2023, where he shattered the marathon world record, completing the race in two hours and 35 seconds. He took 34 seconds off the previous world record of 2:01:09, set by Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin the previous year.

Kelvin Kiptum has been named the 2023 Men's World Athlete of the Year award for his exceptional performances in out-of-stadium events at the World Athletics Awards in Monaco.

The 24-year-old showcased his prowess by participating in two marathons this year, emerging victorious in both with remarkable times that captivated the world of athletics.

Kiptum made history in October at the Chicago Marathon. His outstanding performance saw him set a world record with a remarkable time of 2:00:35, breaking the previous record by 34 seconds and becoming the first man to complete a marathon in under 2:01. Notably, he surpassed the record set by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge.

His running journey began in 2019 when he debuted as a pacer at the Rotterdam Marathon. Fast forward to December of the same year, he achieved victory in his first full marathon in Valencia, clocking 2:01:53. This made him the fastest marathon debutant and the third-fastest marathoner in history, following Kipchoge (2:01:09) and Kenenisa Bekele (2:01:41).

In an awe-inspiring turn of events, Kiptum went on to smash the course record at the London Marathon, claiming victory in a remarkable 1:01:25 on April 23, surpassing Kipchoge's previous record of 2:02:37 from 2019.
