Palestinian PM submits resignation to Mahmoud Abbas over Gaza 'aggression'

His resignation comes barely a week after he attended and addressed the AU summit where he passionately appealed for decisive action to halt the ongoing conflict in the besieged Gaza.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has announced his resignation and that of his government, state agency Wafa reported on Monday.

The resignation is in light of the "political, security and economic developments" of the Israeli war in Gaza.

"I submit the government's resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas," Mohammad said, adding it comes in the wake of the "developments related to the aggression against the Gaza strip and the escalation in the West Bank and Jerusalem".

In a statement to cabinet, Mohammad Shtayyeh who has served as prime minister since his appointment in 2019, said the next stage would need to take account of the emerging reality in besieged Gaza, which has been laid waste by nearly five months of heavy fighting.

The Palestinian Authority formed 30 years ago under the interim Oslo Peace Accords, exercises limited governance over parts of the occupied West Bank but lost power in Gaza following a struggle with Hamas in 2007.

So far, almost 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza fighting, according to Palestinian health authorities, and almost the entire population has been driven from their homes.

His resignation comes barely a week after he attended and addressed the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he passionately appealed for decisive action to halt the ongoing conflict in the besieged Gaza.

"Let the voice of Africa and the voice of your union be loud for the freedom of Palestine and the right of its people to self-determination and the embodiment of the Palestinian state and its recognition as a member state of the United Nations," Mohammad told African leaders in Ethiopia.
