Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital restricts visits after KNH patient murders

The changes come after the July 11 murder of a patient at KNH, which triggered public outrage and raised questions about the safety of patients in referral facilities across the country.
All visitors to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) will now undergo mandatory screening at entry points, as the facility rolls out stricter safety rules in response to the murder of two patients at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), an incident that exposed glaring security gaps in major public hospitals.
In a notice issued to the public on August 1, 2025, the Eldoret-based hospital also announced changes to its visiting hours, limiting access to two daily sessions, between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm, and again from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

In addition, each patient will only be allowed a maximum of two visitors at a time, in line with new Ministry of Health instructions.
“In compliance with the Ministry of Health directive to improve safety and security, MTRH wishes to inform the public that effective August 1, 2025, each patient will only be allowed a maximum of two visitors at a time,” the notice read.
“Visiting Hours will be strictly: Lunch: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm and evening: 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. We urge all visitors to adhere to the above guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.”
The changes come after the July 11 murder of a patient at KNH, which triggered public outrage and raised questions about the safety of patients in referral facilities across the country.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale confirmed that the incident led to a crisis meeting with CEOs of all national referral hospitals to address security lapses and restore public trust in the health sector.
“Following the tragic loss of a young Kenyan at KNH on July 11, 2025, I convened a crisis meeting with CEOs of all national referral hospitals to initiate urgent reforms and rebuild public trust in our health system,” said Duale.
He announced that all referral hospitals would now be required to enforce tighter entry controls and stricter visitor management policies, including screening procedures and limited patient access.
“Effective immediately, all referral hospitals will enforce tighter security measures: a two-visitor limit per patient and mandatory screening at entry points,” Duale said.
The measures are expected to be implemented in all national referral facilities, including KNH, MTRH, and others under the Ministry’s supervision.
