The coastal city of Mombasa is in mourning following the death of Hasmukh ‘Hasuu’ Patel, the owner of Mombasa Cement, who passed away earlier today.

The businessman, renowned for his compassionate spirit and unwavering dedication to the community, leaves behind a legacy of generosity and civic engagement that has touched the lives of many.

Hasmukh Patel, often affectionately referred to as "Hasuu," was the cornerstone of Mombasa Cement, also known as Nyumba Group.

He was known not only for his business acumen but also for his philanthropic efforts that extended far beyond the walls of his company. Patel was a key figure in transforming Mombasa's Kibarani dumping site from a neglected landfill into a vibrant recreational park, a project that became a symbol of environmental renewal and hope for residents.

Patel's company, Mombasa Cement, expressed their grief in a statement today, saying, "We are deeply saddened to share that the cornerstone of Nyumba Group has passed away. His blueprints for success and passion for construction will always guide us."

The company also highlighted his efforts in feeding the poor, providing fresh water to drought-stricken communities through water bowsers, and constructing perimeter walls for public schools to ensure safety for children.

Among those paying tribute was Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy, Hassan Joho, who noted Patel’s significant contributions to social welfare and environmental conservation.

"It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that I have learnt of the death of Hasmukh ‘Hasuu’ Patel of the renowned brand, Mombasa Cement," Joho stated, adding, his dedication to making Mombasa a better place through his philanthropic work and commitment to environmental conservation has left a lasting impact on all of us.

Joho further acknowledged Patel’s support for underprivileged communities, particularly in areas such as healthcare and education, and stated that "Patel’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, and his contributions to society will always be remembered with gratitude."

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir also expressed his condolences, describing Patel as a dedicated and active participant in community affairs.

"We have learned with sadness of the passing of businessman Patel. Patel will be remembered for his generous support for the underprivileged," said Governor Abdulswamad. He assured Patel’s family of the County Government’s support during this difficult time.

Mombasa Woman Representative Zamzam Mohamed described Patel as a "big friend to the poor and the needy in our community." She emphasised the profound impact of his charitable deeds, stating, "You touched the lives of our people in a special way, and your deeds will be remembered by many generations to come."

From the neighbouring county, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro echoed similar sentiments, describing Patel as a "respected family man who always supported and cared for his community."

His message of solidarity extended to Patel’s family and friends as they navigate through this period of loss.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also joined in paying tribute, saying, "Patel, the owner of Mombasa Cement, is dead. May the Almighty God give strength to his family and the entire Mombasa Cement fraternity during this difficult time."

Patel’s contributions to Mombasa and the wider coastal region were varied and impactful. Beyond his environmental and educational initiatives, he was known for his commitment to providing fresh drinking water in areas plagued by drought and for supporting local infrastructure improvements.

His philanthropic endeavours extended to feeding programmes and other community services that addressed the needs of the less fortunate.
