Speaking out for the first time, Barnabas Njeru, Muteti’s father, expressed his shock and distress over his son’s abduction and appealed to the government for assistance in locating him.
“I was shocked on December 21 when I received the news that my son had gone missing. I have since then been a worried man,” Njeru said.
“If the young man erred, then I apologise on his behalf. I also want to apologise to Kenyans.”
Muteti’s mother, Doricate Njeru, also shared the pain and anxiety the family has been enduring since his disappearance.
She described the emotional toll the abduction has had on them, stating, “I have not been able to have a meal because I am not at peace. It has been tears since he went missing. I ask the government to help us so that our son can be released.”
The National Police Service has denied any involvement in the abduction, which is part of a disturbing pattern of similar incidents across the country.
On the same day Muteti was taken, blogger Billy Mwangi was abducted in Embu, while other individuals—including Bernard Kavuli, Steve Mbisi, Gideon Kibet, and Ronny Kiplang’at have also gone missing in separate incidents across Nairobi, Machakos, Kiambu, and Embu.
The series of abductions has sparked widespread outrage, with Kenyans demanding action on social media.
The Kenya National Human Rights Commission reported that 82 people have been abducted since June 2024, with 29 still unaccounted for. Seven people were reported missing in December alone.
President William Ruto pledged to take action to halt the troubling trend but urged parents to instil discipline in their children, emphasising the importance of family responsibility in safeguarding the nation’s youth.
“I call upon all parents to take care of their children. As for the reports about abductions, we will bring them to a stop,” he said.
