Metallic object that fell in Makueni was from a rocket, space agency says
KSA assured the public that the object poses no immediate safety risk.
The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) has confirmed that the mysterious metallic object that fell in Mbooni East, Makueni County, is a separation ring from a rocket, according to preliminary findings.
The object that left residents bewildered fell in Mukuku village, Nduluku Location on December 30, 2024.
Upon receiving reports about the mysterious object, KSA said it immediately dispatched its officials to the scene.
In a statement released on Wednesday, KSA confirmed that the object was a metallic ring approximately 2.5 metres in diameter and weighing about 500 kilos.
“These objects are typically designed to burn up upon re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere or fall in uninhabited regions, such as oceans,” KSA explained, adding that this occurrence is an isolated case.
KSA officials collaborated with a multi-agency team and local authorities to secure the area and retrieve the debris. The object is currently in KSA’s custody for further analysis.
The agency thanked Mukuku residents for promptly reporting the incident and cooperating to ensure public safety. It also thanked the local leadership, the Makueni County government, and the media for aiding in disseminating crucial information.
KSA assured the public that the object poses no immediate safety risk.
“Our experts will thoroughly examine the object, identify its origin through established frameworks, and keep the public informed of any developments,” the agency said.
The agency also reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe and responsible space activities, urging citizens to report unusual sightings or objects to the relevant authorities promptly.
