Mombasa incident
At the same time, two people are nursing gunshot wounds after stray bullets hit them during a mob injustice incident in Likoni, Mombasa on Friday.
The two, who include a female adult who was hit at the left thigh and abdomen and a male adult who was hit at the right side of his abdomen were rushed to Likoni sub-county hospital in "fair" condition" as police at Inuka police station began a probe into the incident.
According to preliminary investigations, officers responding to reports of gunshots heard in the area of Vyemani rushed to the scene and found a crowd of people having beaten a male adult to death.
Upon probing, they established that the deceased person had boarded a boda boda from Likoni to Vyemani grounds, but refused to pay for the ride, instead opting to pull out his gun and fire in the air to scare the rider.
"Upon arrival, the passenger alighted from the boda boda and started making a lot of phone calls, without paying for the ride. The boda boda guy started demanding money to go back, but the deceased opened his small bag and pulled out a rifle, cocked and shot in the air to scare the boda boda guy," the police said.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased then attempted to jump onto the motorcycle to escape the scene but was pulled down by the rider to the ground and in the process fired several bullets in the air.
The rider, however, according to them, managed to snatch the weapon from the passenger who was then attacked by irate members of the public with stones until his death.
Police recovered an AK rifle with 12 rounds of ammunition, a mobile phone and four spent cartridges from the scene.
The deceased's body was taken to the Coast General Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem and identification.
