International Justice Mission appoints Vincent Chahale as Country Director for Kenya
Chahale has been with IJM Kenya since October 2020, leading the Justice Systems Interventions team for the Kenya Police Abuse of Power programme.
The International Justice Mission (IJM) has appointed Vincent Chahale as the Country Director for the Kenya office.
The Legal and Justice Systems expert succeeds Benson Shamala who has led the organisation for the last five years. His appointment was announced by Andy Griffiths, the organisation's Regional President, for Africa and Europe.
Chahale has been with IJM Kenya since October 2020, leading the Justice Systems Interventions team for the Kenya Police Abuse of Power programme, with overall responsibility for developing strategies for collaborative casework to create systemic changes in Kenya's Criminal justice system.
Before joining IJM, Vincent worked in a variety of senior positions, mostly with the Government of Kenya, including at the Commission on Administrative Justice, the Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs, and the State Law office.
He also served as a technical committee Member of the Presidential Task Force on the Legal and Regulatory Framework for Fighting Corruption in Kenya and a Member of the Judiciary Task Force on Sentencing both of which brought significant changes to Kenya's Justice System Reform.
"Vincent is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 20 years' experience in legal and advisory matters, leadership, performance management, mediation, and corporate governance," a statement from IJM Kenya notes.
Chahale who has dedicated his career to championing justice, safeguarding human rights, and strengthening justice systems in Kenya will be expected to lead the organisation whose key mission is to strengthen government capacity to address police abuse of power and violence against women and children.
Through the organisation, mothers and wives of victims of police brutality in informal settlements find reprieve through the Mothers of Victims and Survivors Network which is comprised of close to 50 members from across Nairobi's low-income settlements including Kayole, Mathare, Dandora, Mukuru, Kibera and elsewhere who come together to seek justice for the killing or brutal victimisation of members of their family, usually young men, by the police.
The organisation has also engaged not only the National Police Service in efforts to promote better police use of power particularly during the elections period but also other key state and non-state actors in efforts towards streamlining the justice processes for victims of child sex trafficking in the Coastal parts of Kenya covering Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa counties.
