Calls for national heroes' burial grounds mount as radio icon Mambo Mbotela to be buried at Lang’ata Cemetery

Wetang'ula expressed disappointment over the planned burial of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela at Lang'ata Cemetery, a public graveyard known for its congestion.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has proposed the establishment of a designated burial site for Kenya's national heroes.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Wetang'ula expressed disappointment over the planned burial of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela at Lang'ata Cemetery, a public graveyard known for its congestion.

"The country needs a hero's corner to bury people like broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela. It is disheartening to hear that we are going to bury broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela in Lang'ata Cemetery; probably his grave will be on top of a grave knowing how crowded the place is," Wetang'ula said.

He urged Parliament to observe a moment of silence in honour of the late radio journalist who passed away last Friday while receiving treatment in Nairobi.

Mbotela's career spanned decades, making him one of Kenya's most influential broadcasters. His deep, resonant voice and unique storytelling style made him a household name.

His dedication to journalism, mastery of Kiswahili, and commitment to educating the public made him a towering figure in the industry.

Legendary media personality

Mbotela was a legendary media personality best known for his long-running radio and TV programme ‘Je, huu ni ungwana?’, which aired on KBC for about 55 years.

Before joining KBC, he briefly worked with Kenya Weekly News and The East African Standard.

Born in 1940 in Freetown, Mombasa to James and Aida Mbotela, he was the firstborn in a family of eight children.

His influence in the media industry spanned decades, mentoring many young broadcasters.

President William Ruto led Kenyans in mourning Mbotela, describing him as a gifted broadcaster who made a lasting impact on Kenya's media industry.

"We are heartbroken by the death of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela. He was a gifted and powerful broadcaster whose alluring voice dominated our airwaves with his first-class football commentaries and the signature programme ‘Je, huu ni ungwana?’"

"Mbotela will fondly be remembered for the integral role he played on our radio stations — through the mentoring of young broadcasters. Our thoughts are with the family, their loved ones, and the media fraternity at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Mzee Mbotela," Ruto said.
