Chebukati's family urges Kenyans to avoid speculation on his death, requests for privacy to mourn

The family addressed speculation regarding the cause of death and whether a post-mortem would be conducted, saying no decision had been made yet.

The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair Wafula Chebukati has urged the public to refrain from speculation surrounding his death, saying they will issue an official statement once they have finalised key decisions.

Chebukati passed away on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

Speaking on behalf of the family, spokesperson Eric Nyongesa confirmed the loss and addressed speculation regarding the cause of death and whether a post-mortem would be conducted, saying no decision had been made yet.

"The family is yet to meet with doctors, and no decision has been made on whether to undertake a post-mortem. We ask everyone to avoid speculation until we are ready to share more details," he said while speaking from Nairobi Lee Funeral Home.

Nyongesa also asked for privacy during this difficult time.

"We are all asking everybody, including the press, the media, and those on social forums, to please allow the family some privacy," he added.

The family said they will issue an official statement after their meeting and once they have gathered all necessary information.

"We will communicate all relevant information once we have had time to meet as a family," Nyongesa added

Chebukati, who served as IEBC Chair from 2017 to 2023, oversaw two general elections during a challenging period in the country.

President William Ruto on Friday led the nation in paying tribute to the late IEBC boss, describing him as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.
