According to investigators, the suspect had been in hiding since February 18, the day Scott was allegedly killed. Following his arrest, he was transferred to Nairobi, where police planned to present him in court for a miscellaneous application to detain him as investigations continue.
Detectives believe at least two more accomplices are still at large and could be hiding in either Nairobi or Mombasa.
Homicide officers handling the case termed the arrest a breakthrough but refrained from disclosing the motive behind the murder.
Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin confirmed the suspect’s arrest and assured that efforts were underway to apprehend the remaining culprits.
“We have a prime suspect in the murder of Scott. The hunt for more suspects is ongoing. We hope to get more suspects involved in this callous murder,” Mohamed said.
Witnesses
Authorities also revealed that a taxi driver and a waiter who had been arrested earlier in connection with the case were found to be innocent and would instead be treated as witnesses.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Milimani Court on Monday, March 3, for the application to extend his detention.
An autopsy conducted on Scott’s body last Thursday at a Makueni mortuary yielded inconclusive results regarding the cause of death.
Government Pathologist Richard Njoroge, who led the examination, said that while soft tissue injuries were found, they were not severe enough to be fatal. As a result, tissue samples were collected for further toxicological analysis at the government chemist.
Investigators were initially inclined to believe that Scott was either strangled or struck with a blunt object. However, with the inconclusive autopsy results, they are now re-evaluating their findings.
According to police reports, Scott had been kidnapped and held for several days in a house in Nairobi’s Pipeline area before being killed.
His body was then transported and dumped in Makongo Forest, where it was discovered on February 22. The police suspect the attackers were after his money and may have accessed his bank accounts before fleeing.
Scott had gone missing from his Nairobi hotel on February 17, and his body was later found at the Makueni County Referral Hospital on February 24, where it had been lying unidentified for two days.
Detectives said investigations are ongoing as authorities work to bring all those responsible to justice.
