Ruto picks Raila's nephew Jaoko Oburu for high-level economic advisory role

As Special Advisor, Jaoko is expected to play a major role in shaping economic inclusion and livelihood strategies targeting underserved and vulnerable groups.

President William Ruto has appointed Jaoko Oburu Odinga to the position of Special Advisor on Economic Empowerment and Sustainable Livelihoods within the Executive Office of the President.

The appointment, which was confirmed on Tuesday, places Jaoko in a key strategic role aimed at addressing economic challenges and supporting inclusive growth efforts across the country.

Jaoko, who is the son of Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga and nephew to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, shared news of his appointment through a post on X.

In the message, he expressed deep appreciation to both President Ruto and Raila Odinga for their support.

“I wish to take this opportunity to give special thanks to President William Ruto for granting me an opportunity to serve Kenyans by appointing me to serve in the capacity of Special Advisor, Economic Empowerment, and Sustainable Livelihoods. Thank you, Your Excellency,” he wrote.

He also acknowledged the role played by the former Prime Minister in encouraging unity and collaboration across different sectors of society.

“I also commend Raila Odinga for showing his faith in me and for creating a conducive environment for Kenyans from all walks of life to work together,” Jaoko added.

As Special Advisor, Jaoko is expected to play a major role in shaping economic inclusion and livelihood strategies targeting underserved and vulnerable groups.

His new position involves working closely with the President and top government officials to develop strategic plans that promote poverty reduction and job creation.

Among his core duties will be providing policy advice on economic empowerment, focusing particularly on support for marginalised populations.

He will contribute to the development and assessment of national programmes intended to boost entrepreneurship, improve access to finance, and create sustainable employment.

In addition to his advisory role, Jaoko will be involved in overseeing and coordinating government-led initiatives that prioritise youth and women's empowerment.

His portfolio includes the promotion of microfinance opportunities, informal sector development, green jobs, and locally driven enterprises.

Jaoko’s new position also requires strong collaboration with key government ministries such as the Treasury, Trade, and Labour.

He will also engage with county governments, civil society groups, and development partners to ensure that economic empowerment programs are rolled out successfully and reach the intended beneficiaries.
