Heavy rains expected across the country this week, Met Department warns

According to Gikungu, rainfall is expected to intensify during the second half of the forecast period.
Kenyans across various counties should prepare for heavy downpours over the next seven days, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned.
The advisory, issued by Director David Gikungu, covers the period between April 22 and April 28 and affects most parts of the country, including Central Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Southeastern Lowlands.

According to Gikungu, rainfall is expected to intensify during the second half of the forecast period.
“Morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur in these places, occasionally spreading to several places during the first half of the forecast period,” he said.
In Central Kenya, counties including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.
Nairobi residents are particularly urged to remain alert as the city is likely to experience rainfall throughout the week.
In Western Kenya and the Rift Valley region, areas projected to receive heavy rainfall include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu.
Other counties forecasted to experience intense weather are Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok.
The Southeastern Lowlands and inland areas of Tana River County will also be affected.
Gikungu said that residents in Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, and parts of Tana River should brace for overwhelming rains that could disrupt daily activities.
While most parts of the country will see wet conditions, areas in the Coast, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya will experience daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C. These include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.
Night temperatures will remain low in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and Central Rift, with some areas recording less than 10°C.
Counties expected to face chilly nights include Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
The department is urging all residents in the affected regions to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the heavy rains are expected to continue until Sunday, April 28.
