Nairobi records highest number of crimes as cases drop nationally- KNBS

The Nairobi City Police Command Station recorded the highest number of crimes in 2024, accounting for 9.6 per cent of the national total, according to the 2025 Economic Survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

The lowest number of crimes were reported in the Kenya Airports Police Unit (KAPU) (87), Garissa (358), and Wajir (373).
Overall, the total number of reported crimes dropped by 3.5 per cent to 101,220 in 2024, down from 104,881 in 2023.
"Marsabit Police Command Station recorded the highest percentage increase in reported crimes at 41.0 per cent in 2024. Other stations that saw a rise included Narok (34.3 per cent), West Pokot (28.6 per cent), and Migori (23.2 per cent)," the report states.
"In contrast, Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, and Machakos recorded declines of 32.4 per cent, 22.1 per cent, and 15.7 per cent, respectively."
While most crime categories showed a downward trend, there were exceptions. Cases of criminal damage, offences involving police officers, and other penal code violations rose by 0.8 per cent, 36.7 per cent, and 16 per cent, respectively.
Homicide cases slightly declined to 3,015 in 2024 from 3,031 in 2023. Other offences against morality also saw a marginal drop to 7,523 from 7,655.
A total of 17,560 theft cases were reported during the period, while offences against persons stood at 24,972. Drug-related crimes were recorded at 8,231 nationally.
Additionally, 1,383 cases of vehicle theft were reported in 2024, down from 1,687 in 2023. Crimes involving police officers rose to 246, up from 180 the previous year.
Offences involving tourists were the least reported, at just 39 cases, while traffic offences dropped significantly to 72 from 173 in 2023.
Economic crimes fell to 4,610, down from 4,970 in 2023, and corruption cases also declined from 116 to 104.
"Traffic offences and offences involving tourists recorded the most significant declines in 2024, falling by 58.4 per cent and 42.6 per cent, respectively. The number of offences against persons and stealing jointly accounted for 42.0 per cent of all crimes reported in 2024," the report concludes.
