Body of Kasipul MP Were arrives in Homa Bay ahead of burial

Were's body was flown from Wilson Airport in Nairobi before landing at Kabunde Airstrip, where it was received by hundreds of mourners.

The body of the late Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were arrived in Homa Bay on Thursday, ahead of his burial scheduled for Friday, May 9, at his rural home in Kachien village, Kasipul Constituency.

Were's body was flown from Wilson Airport in Nairobi before landing at Kabunde Airstrip, where it was received by hundreds of mourners.

Grief engulfed the airstrip as emotional residents wailed upon seeing the coffin being transferred into the hearse.

A motorcade, led by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, escorted the body through Homa Bay Town, Kendu Bay, Kadongo, Sikri, and Oyugis Town.

The convoy was repeatedly slowed down by emotional crowds who lined the roads to pay their final respects.

According to the MP's funeral programme, the body will be at Agoro Sare Primary school for public viewing before heading to the MP's home for a night vigil ahead of the Saturday burial.

The MP was shot on April 30, 2025, at around 7:40 PM while driving in a white Toyota Crown along Ngong Road, near City Mortuary.

His vehicle had stopped at the traffic light when a motorcycle carrying two people pulled alongside. One of them walked to the passenger side of the car and fired multiple shots before fleeing.

The MP's driver and bodyguard rushed him to Nairobi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

So far, nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of the legislator, among them his bodyguard Allan Omondi Ogolla and driver Walter Owino. Police suspect the two were part of a criminal gang involved in planning the MP's assassination.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday confirmed that some of Were's close allies were complicit in the murder, terming the act a betrayal.

"We have made very significant progress in arresting the perpetrators and their collaborators, and it will shock you to note that this was a heinous crime done in a cavalier manner, involving people who ordinarily should have taken good care of him in his interest," Murkomen said.

Detectives have also recovered the pistol used in the killing, confirming it was also used in a series of other armed robberies in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
