Police refute brutality allegations in Julia Njoki's death

The death of Julia Njoki has generated public concern, especially on social media platforms, where some users have alleged that her death was a result of excessive force by police officers.

The National Police Service (NPS) has rejected claims linking the death of Julia Njoki to police brutality during her time in custody.

In a press statement issued on July 14, 2025, the NPS confirmed that Njoki was arrested on July 7 during protests and later remanded at Nanyuki Prison after being formally charged. The service did not disclose the cause of her death but said that all procedures were followed according to the law.

According to the statement, Juliet was among 126 individuals who were arrested during demonstrations in Nanyuki. The NPS reported that the group was processed and presented before the Nanyuki Law Courts on 8th July 2025. Each individual, including Juliet, was charged with malicious damage to property under Section 339(1) of the Penal Code.

The police stated that at the time of the court appearance, all of the accused were in good health. They pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted a cash bail of fifty thousand shillings for each accused person, or in the alternative, directed that they be remanded at Nanyuki Prison pending the next mention date.

The statement by the police did not provide further details regarding Juliet’s health condition following the court proceedings. However, it emphasized that she was in good health at the time she was arraigned.

The NPS also reported that no complaint had been received by any police station or unit alleging police misconduct or failure to act.

The police said that in the event of any formal complaint being filed, the responsible oversight agencies would launch investigations to determine the facts surrounding the matter. The NPS emphasized that such investigations would be independent and credible, and would lead to appropriate action based on the findings.

“The National Police Service remains committed to ensuring that the highest standards of law enforcement are maintained and that every officer is guided by fidelity to the Constitution, impartiality, and independence,” read part of the statement.

The police assured members of the public that the service supports accountability in all areas of its work. It noted that any concern raised by the public regarding the conduct of police officers would be treated with the seriousness it deserves.

The police further clarified that the institution had nothing to conceal and would cooperate with any inquiry that may be initiated to address concerns about Juliet’s death. It also urged citizens to follow due process when reporting such matters so that appropriate mechanisms can be activated.

The death of Juliet Kariuki has generated public concern, especially on social media platforms, where some users have alleged that her death was a result of excessive force by police officers.

The NPS did not address these claims directly but reiterated that no formal complaint had been received up to the time of issuing the statement.

The NPS encouraged the public to seek information from official sources and avoid speculation.
