Family blames hospital security failures after kin murdered at Kenyatta National Hospital ward

Margaret said she was optimistic that Ndegwa would be attended to and discharged after recovering.

The family of Edward Maingi Ndegwa, a patient who was brutally murdered inside Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), has broken their silence, accusing the hospital of gross negligence and demanding justice for his death.

Edward’s mother, Margaret Ndegwa, expressed deep sorrow and outrage, stating that her son was on the verge of recovery when his life was cut short.

Speaking to a local TV station, Margaret said she was optimistic that Ndegwa would be attended to and discharged after recovering.

“My question is, where is my justice going to come from? My son is dead, not because of the sickness that took him to Kenyatta, but because of the negligence of the staff in Ward 7B,” said Margaret.

Kennedy Kalombotole, the suspect in Edward Ndegwa’s killing, had been living at KNH since late 2022 after being discharged with no identification or known relatives. In June 2024, a temporary home briefly housed him, but after he was readmitted in December due to illness, the facility later declined to take him back. As a result, he continued to reside within KNH, despite no longer requiring inpatient care.

His name has also come up in connection with a similar case from February 2025, when another patient, Gilbert Kinyua, was found dead in the same ward with a slit throat.

Margaret has questioned why the hospital allowed a man already suspected of a prior murder to remain around other vulnerable patients

The family is demanding that KNH take full responsibility for allowing the prime suspect, Kennedy Kalombotole, to remain in the hospital despite serious red flags.

“If they suspected he was mentally unwell, I ask, why was he at Kenyatta? Kenyatta is not a mental hospital. The government has the Mathare Hospital for that. The moment they discovered he was unstable, they should have taken him there,” said Margaret.

She also called out the hospital’s leadership and security.

“My problem is with the Kenyatta Hospital administration, the CEO, and the failed security system in a place where patients lie unconscious. How can a criminal be allowed to live inside a ward meant for the weak and defenceless?”

This is the second reported killing in Ward 7B this year. In February, another patient,39-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, was found dead in similar circumstances. Kalombotole is now being investigated in connection with both deaths.

A post-mortem on Edward’s body is scheduled for Monday. Kalombotole is expected to appear in court the same day.
