Kericho Governor Erick Mutai faces second impeachment attempt

While the exact grounds for the impeachment remain unclear, insiders in the Assembly cite alleged concerns over governance and accountability as motivating factors behind the renewed push.
Kericho MCAs have filed a fresh petition to impeach Governor Erick Mutai.
This is the second time the county boss is facing ouster attempts since he assumed office in 2022, with the latest motion already received by the Speaker’s office.

The petition, dated August 6, was submitted by Sigowet Ward MCA Honourable Kiprotich Rogony and formally received and stamped by the Office of the Speaker on the same day.
In the petition, titled Proposed Motion for the Removal by Impeachment of Dr Erick Mutai as Kericho County Governor, MCA Rogony attached a proposed motion, a signed list of supporting MCAs, and documentary evidence backing the claims against the governor.
The documents were addressed to the Clerk of the County Assembly, who confirmed receipt and noted that the motion satisfies the requirements of Standing Order No. 70. Consequently, the matter has been forwarded to the Assembly Business Committee for scheduling.
“The proposed motion complies with our Standing Order No. 70 and will be scheduled accordingly,” the Speaker of the County Assembly said in a statement on Wednesday.
While the exact grounds for the impeachment remain unclear, insiders in the Assembly cite alleged concerns over governance and accountability as motivating factors behind the renewed push.
This marks the second attempt to remove Governor Mutai from office. A previous effort in 2024 failed after the Senate dismissed the impeachment motion on procedural grounds.
If the current motion secures the required threshold in the County Assembly, it will be transmitted to the Senate for further consideration.
In line with the law, Governor Mutai will be granted an opportunity to defend himself at both the County Assembly level and, if escalated, before the Senate.
