IEBC announces resumption of continuous voter registration from September 29

Eligible Kenyans will be able to register at any IEBC Constituency Office, except in areas with ongoing by-elections.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the resumption of continuous voter registration starting Monday, September 29, 2025, as part of its preparations for the upcoming elections.

In a statement on Thursday, the Commission said the exercise is in line with its constitutional mandate under Article 88(4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and is intended to ensure that every eligible citizen has a chance to participate in shaping the country’s future.

“This exercise is a vital step in ensuring that every eligible Kenyan has the opportunity to participate in shaping the country’s future through democratic elections. It is particularly directed towards young people who have recently attained 18 years, and all citizens who have not yet registered or need to update their voter information,” IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon said.

Ethekon noted that preparations for the exercise are already underway, with several key activities being carried out to guarantee efficiency, transparency and inclusivity.

These include mapping registration centres, holding constituency-level stakeholder forums, consolidating geospatial data, testing and configuring Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits, gazettement of registration officers, training field staff, distributing registration materials, conducting data protection assessments and rolling out voter education campaigns.

Eligible Kenyans will be able to register at any IEBC Constituency Office, except in areas with ongoing by-elections. The Commission noted that services to be offered include new voter registration, transfer to a new polling station, correction or update of details and inspection of registration status.

According to Article 83 of the Constitution, a person is eligible to register if they are a Kenyan citizen, 18 years of age or older, possess a valid national identity card or passport, are not already registered elsewhere, have not been convicted of an election offence in the past five years, are not declared to be of unsound mind and are not listed in the current register of voters.

The Commission explained that new registrants will be required to present a valid ID or passport at designated registration centres, complete the relevant form, and provide biometric and personal data. Upon registration, they will receive an acknowledgement slip, although the slip will not serve as an identification document on election day.

Transfers will be processed at constituency offices where voters wish to relocate, and will involve filling out Form C and biometric validation. Registered voters may also inspect their details through the IEBC portal at https://verify.iebc.or.ke or by visiting constituency offices.

However, the Commission clarified that this phase will not cover voter registration for Kenyans in the diaspora or those in correctional facilities, citing ongoing policy reviews.

“Further updates will be communicated once the reviews are concluded,” it said.

IEBC emphasised that voter registration is both a right and a responsibility, calling on citizens to take advantage of the opportunity.

“The Commission urges all eligible Kenyans, especially the youth who have recently attained voting age, to seize this opportunity and take the first step in shaping the future. Registering to vote is not just a constitutional right; it is a powerful act of responsibility. Your voice matters,” it said.

The Commission also appealed for active participation in the democratic process ahead of the next General Election, scheduled for August 10, 2027.

“As we look ahead to the General Election on 10th August 2027, let us commit to building a nation where every voice counts. Let’s be the generation that doesn’t sit back, but stands up, shows up, and votes for Kenya,” Ethekon said.
