Indiscipline to blame for Nairobi–Nakuru Highway gridlock, says KeNHA

KeNHA urged motorists to observe lane discipline and avoid overlapping, saying that this will make it impossible to ease the congestion.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has blamed road users' indiscipline for the hours-long traffic gridlock experienced along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway on Thursday night.
In a statement, KeNHA said it is working closely with the traffic police to help ease the situation and urged motorists to observe lane discipline and avoid overlapping.
"The Authority regrets to bring to the attention of the public that from around 8:30 pm yesterday, congestion developed along the Nakuru - Nairobi Highway. This was worsened by lane indiscipline, which resulted in a traffic gridlock that is currently being experienced between Naivasha and Kikopey. The Authority is working closely with the traffic police to help ease the situation, and normal traffic flow is expected to resume gradually through the course of the morning," the Authority said in a statement.

KeNHA said the increase in traffic could also be attributed to a high number of motorists who travelled to attend Thursday's National Youth Service (NYS) pass-out parade at its paramilitary academy in Gilgil, where over 18,000 recruits graduated.
The Authority advised those intending to travel between Nairobi and Nakuru to consider using alternative routes such as the Gilgil - Olkalou - Dundori – Lanet and the Flyover - Njambini - Olkalou - Dundori - Lanet routes.
Some motorists said vehicle movement stalled at around midnight and was yet to move at 8:00 am on Friday morning.
"Five hours in traffic between the Weigh Bridge at Gilgil and Kikopey in Nakuru County! Drivers overlapping, informing 3 to 4 lanes on the highway! This is how selfish, impatient, and unruly we are as citizens. @ntsa_kenya @TransportKE over to you. We need to mainstream values in our families, schools, and professional circles," presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame stated in a post on X.
