Maraga condemns "misuse of public funds" through government empowerment programmes

Maraga condemned what he described as the blatant diversion of taxpayers’ money for political purposes.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has slammed the government for misusing public funds through empowerment programmes, terming it a political bribery disguised as development.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony at Karmel Park in Kisii County, Maraga condemned what he described as the blatant diversion of taxpayers’ money for political purposes.

He specifically pointed to instances where top government leaders, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and various cabinet secretaries, were seen distributing cash across the country and even reportedly collecting funds at State House.

“This is not government generosity, this is taxpayers’ money being diverted for political gain,” Maraga said.

Maraga warned that the diversion of taxpayers’ money was crippling essential services, citing disruptions in higher education caused by unpaid lecturers and the looming threat of strikes, which had already begun affecting universities.

Calling on Kenyans to exercise their democratic power, the former CJ urged citizens to vote out the current administration in the 2027 General Election, emphasising the need for leadership that can effectively manage the country’s resources and priorities.

He also revealed that his ongoing engagements in various counties, including planned forums in Mombasa, are part of a broader initiative to hold town hall meetings with professionals and stakeholders.

Maraga said these sessions are intended to gather public views and identify pressing challenges, insights that would inform his manifesto, should he decide to run for president.

He recently maintained that if elected, he would maintain integrity and avoid any conflict of interest. He also announced that he would not allow his family or friends to do business with the government.

"I will not steal from you and will not allow anybody to steal your money," he said.

He promised to ensure adherence to the law, so as to grow Kenya’s economy and fix the country's ailing healthcare and education systems.
