The award was received on behalf of President Ruto by Kenya’s Ambassador to Morocco, Jessica Gakinya.
It comes amid government efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure, provide comprehensive support for athletes, and raise the standard of football across the nation.
Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed praised the award, noting that it signals a promising future for Kenyan football.
In a post on his official X account early Thursday, November 20, he shared his confidence that local players will soon be recognised on similar platforms.
“Our head of state, William Ruto, received a special award for his support towards football development in Kenya at the #CAFAwards2024. Kenyan Ambassador to Morocco, Gakinya, received the Award on behalf of the President. With the elaborate support structure the government is putting in place for sports and particularly football, I have no doubt our players shall soon be recipients of these coveted accolades as well,” he stated.
The accolade follows Kenya’s successful hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which drew commendation for its organisation, stadium facilities, and engaging atmosphere created by fans.
The smooth delivery of CHAN 2024 demonstrated the country’s ability to host high-profile events and boosted confidence in its capacity to manage continental tournaments.
Looking ahead, Kenya is preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
This upcoming tournament is expected to further enhance the country’s football profile, offering local talent a chance to shine on a larger stage.
Like CHAN, AFCON 2027 is anticipated to bring substantial attention to Kenya, attract regional fans, and create opportunities for homegrown players to compete against the continent’s best.
As preparations for AFCON 2027 continue, the momentum from CHAN 2024 and the CAF award positions Kenya as a rising hub for African football.
