The government, through agencies such as the Kenya Meteorological Department, has also advised people living in flood-prone areas to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas.

The government and the Kenya Red Cross Society are on high alert following heavy rains that saw a family of four buried alive on Monday night in Narok County.

The incident comes amid heavy rains that have pounded large parts of the country which have been accompanied by flash floods.

A husband, wife and their two children, were buried in the shocking incident, police said.

The incident happened on Monday night at Torokiat village in Ololulunga, Narok South County.

A police report identified the four as Robert Keter, 35, Faith Keter, 24, Brian Kibet, 5, and Cherotich Keter, 3.

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Narok County over the past four days, bursting river banks and destroying crops. Officers from Torokiat police post in the area are leading rescue efforts.

Area Police Chief Isaac Omare called for caution as the region grapples with heavy rainfall.

"Mudslides occurred at an unknown time of the night and caused death to 4 residents members of the same family," the police said in a statement.

Authorities said major highways in various parts of the country had been submerged, impeding traffic flow.

A passenger bus carrying 51 passengers narrowly escaped death on Tuesday when floodwaters engulfed their bus on the Garissa-Nairobi Highway, forcing them to save themselves by climbing to its top.

The incident occurred at Lager Areli at around 11.30 am as passengers in the Umma Express Bus headed from Garissa to Nairobi.

The government, through agencies such as the Kenya Meteorological Department, has also advised people living in flood-prone areas to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas.
