"But Ruto’s new prominence on the international stage comes amid significant challenges in Kenya, including last summer’s protests against the rising cost of living and a gas-tax increase Ruto spearheaded, as well as this January’s demonstrations against allegations of judicial interference," Time noted.
"To continue to make progress abroad, Ruto will need to manage challenges at home too," Time said in a statement.
Time Magazine noted that President Ruto's leadership has changed the position of Africa in the climate change debate, saying, "In one swoop, he changed the position of Africa from that of a back seat passenger in the climate crisis discussion to being a lead navigator—an outstanding achievement for the continent."
President Ruto's efforts have yielded significant results, including a unanimous agreement from African countries to rapidly expand renewable energy and $23 billion in pledges to support climate goals. His call for debt relief for African countries has also resonated globally.
However, Time Magazine also noted that President Ruto faces significant challenges at home, including recent protests against the rising cost of living and allegations of judicial interference.
"To continue making progress abroad, Ruto will need to manage challenges at home too," the magazine said.
Time Magazine also honored Kennedy Odede, the founder and CEO of SHOFCO, for his efforts to lift communities out of poverty.
