Live blog: Heightened security countrywide as anti-govt demos resume

Security across the country has been heightened ahead of planned anti-government demonstrations on Tuesday.

Despite President William Ruto having ceded ground on various issues demanded by the Gen Z who have been leading the protests, the youths have remained defiant and vowed to continue with the street demos as they continue to push for more governance reforms and accountability.

11:57 am - Kericho County Police Commander Geoffrey Mayiek instructed to take immediate action and deal with a group (seen with rungus) that had been hired by the local businessmen ahead of planned demos.

A similar instruction from the Police Headquarters has been made to the Eldoret Police boss.

11:38 am - Police lob teargas canisters to disperse demonstrators who are surging in numbers to access the CBD. Police are also making arrests of individuals they believe are part of protesters.

11:30 am - Running battles between police and protesters have begun across the streets of Tom Mboya, Moi Avenue and Kimathi Street in Nairobi's CBD.

10:33 am - Minimal activity along City Hall way as motorists and pedestrians stay away in anticipation of anti-government protests.
